Simple Tips to Protect Your Plumbing this Winter

Simple Tips to Protect Your Plumbing this WinterThe onset of winter can be devastating to an unprepared plumbing system, especially ones that have not undergone updates for quite some time. Some of the most common issues brought on by the frigid temperatures includes frozen pipes, busted radiators, burst water heaters and general leaks. Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to drastically reduce the chances of these and other issues as colder temperatures set in. Here are a couple tips to prevent winter induced plumbing damage.

Insulate pipes

Any pipes that are exposed to the elements should be insulated using special foam or other insulation material. Most exposed pipes that are subject to freezing will be found in attics, crawl spaces, along outside walls or inside of garages. If you have the ability to wrap these pipes do so, otherwise it would be smart to contact a local plumber to provide assistance with this necessary winter plumbing task.

Watch for clogged drains

To prevent standing water in pipes, which is more likely to clog, be sure to take care of any slow drains that are present in the home, including in sinks, showers and tubs. As the water freezes and thaws it can cause the pipes to expand and eventually crack, leading to leaks or flooding issues.

Outdoor prep

It is important that you protect your home's outside faucets. Be sure to disconnect hoses and use styrofoam covers on faucets to make sure that they are as protected as possible from the outside air.
